AMD Drivers have had Ray-Tracing Support since July

While AMD’s Graphics Cards with ray-tracing cores are yet to be officially announced, PCGamesN has made quite an interesting discovery. It seems, that AMD Drivers have had Ray-Tracing support in the code ever since July of this month. This was the update with support for the Gears 5 Beta (Adrenalin Edition 19.7.2) While the support has always been there, the code is yet to be activated.

A big driver update is due at the end of the year which will serve as a major update for the Adrenalin Software. It will bring forth new features and presumably enable ray-tracing support. PCGamesN spotted several lines of code in the form .dll files and several references to the Microsoft DirectX Ray-Tracing library. While this isn’t the first hint that AMD will support ray-tracing, it further confirms RT support on the Navi 12 and 14 cards.

AMD is expected to launch the RX 5800 and the 5600 graphics based on the RDNA architecture by the end of this year. They will presumably follow it up with a future 2020 launch with new RDNA 2 graphics cards. These cards will have ray-tracing cores and have hardware-accelerated ray-tracing. While the 5800 and 5600 won’t have RT cores, AMD might enable RT support when they launch by the end of this year. Since the Adrenalin Software already has support for RT, it won’t be too much of a stretch to expect some form of RT support on the Navi 12 and 14 GPUs.
