Earlier this week, user shamino1978, an ASUS employee mentioned that AMD has deliberately lowered the boost clock on its Ryzen 3000 series of processors for longer life on a forum post over at overclock.net. This confirms the rumors of the 3rd generation processors being underclocked that have been appearing on forums for over a month now.
Last month u/e0da46 posted on r/Amd regarding how he got his Ryzen 9 3900X to boost to 4.6GHz. He based his analysis on the fact that different CPU instructions generate different amounts of heat and wrote simple C programs to check the boost across each of them. From his test results, it can be concluded that the CPU was running faster under cooler workloads; or in other words, was thermal throttling.
Moreover, according to testing done by guru3D, Ryzen 7 3800X shows different boost clock speeds with different motherboards. At the time, they concluded that it was due to better optimizations by ASUS as compared to other motherboard manufacturers.
As per the ASUS employee, AMD has limited the boost behavior on the ASEGA versions to ensure better longevity for the Ryzen 3000 processors. He also hints to a more customizable version releasing in the future. While quite vague, this probably means an update that will give users the option to go for a higher boost clock at the cost of durability. We’ll keep you updated as this story develops.
