Askiaface for iOS & Android moving forward

Askiaface: moving forward – Open Ends

In order for us to continue maintaining and improving our face-to-face iOS and Android apps, we continually need to update the components upon which these are built; namely the base SDKs provided by Apple and Google.

Of course, this implies that we sometimes also need to drop support for older versions of these development tools. Either because maintaining them is time-consuming or because of breaking changes introduced in subsequent platform updates.

We have therefore decided to drop support for such obsolete mobile OS versions. Here’s the breakdown:

iOS

Starting with the next update of the app (version 3.4.0), we will only support iOS 11, 12 and 13.This update is currently scheduled for a mid-December release date.

iOS 11 was released in 2017 and these past three versions account for 86% of the user base.

For those of you running older versions, we strongly advise you to update your devices (if possible). If not, you will still be able to use the current version of the iOS app but will not be able to upgrade to more recent versions of our face-to-face application.

Android

Starting with the next update of the app (version 3.3.33), we will drop support for all Android versions before Android 6.0. This update is currently scheduled for a mid-December release date.

Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) was released in 2015 and these past four versions account for 81% of the user base.

As for the iOS app, we advise those of you to update you devices when possible and, if not, you will still be able to use the current version of the Android app but will not be able to to upgrade to more recent versions of the application.

Wrap-up

These steps will allow us to implement much needed features, redesigns and various performance improvements and fixes.Stay tuned to see askiaface moving forward!
