Produce delivery service expands to Maryland

Misfits Market has expanded its service into Maryland and other East Coast markets.

The Philadelphia-based organic food company launched in summer 2018, and has since expanded to serve 11 states.

Misfits Market “rescues” produce with cosmetic defects and then ships them to consumers. The company has saved more than 5 million pounds of food that would’ve been thrown away.

The Misfits Market model is based on access, delivery to more areas than other urban-focused outlets offering similar services.

“Delivering to every ZIP code in the states we serve allows us to go beyond dense urban areas and put healthy food within reach of every household while supporting responsible growing practices,” CEO and Founder Abhi Ramesh said in a statement.

The store’s boxes can be purchased once or on a weekly or bi-weekly basis through its website. The Mischief Box is $19 plus $4.50 shipping, and contains 10 to 12 pounds of fruits and vegetables. The Madness Box is $34 plus $4.50 shipping, and contains 18 to 20 pounds of produce.

The amount of food in the boxes would cost around twice as much at a grocery store or farmers market, estimates the company.

“By making misfit produce more accessible and affordable, we’re able to reduce food waste at a scale that creates positive and lasting impact,” Ramesh said.
