Eddie Vedder performed the In Memoriam on the Oscars tribute to the people who passed away this past year. Vedder covered the late Tom Petty’s “Room At The Top.” You can expect to see many great individuals from Jerry Lewis to Mary Tyler Moore and Bill Paxton. Vedder is the elder statesman of the 90s grunge movement and is quickly becoming the only good thing left standing from that decade.
Jennifer Garner introduced this year’s in memoriam segment at the Oscars, paying tribute to Audrey Hepburn with a quote from the late star. “There is no joy without sorrow,” Garner said, noting all of the massive contributions from those who have passed in the last year.
The montage included tributes to Chuck Berry, Harry Dean Stanton, Sam Shepard, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and many others. Watch the segment below. Last year, Sara Bareilles covered Joni Mitchell, and the year before, Dave Grohl covered the Beatles.

Vedder joined the band that became Pearl Jam in 1990. Their first album, became a huge hit on the strength of tracks like “Alive,” and “Jeremy,” and their two follow-up records went multiplatinum. Along with his longtime association with the band, the musician has contributed to numerous films, with his work for Into the Wild doubling as his first solo album. Vedder is also a noted activist, having raised funds for various causes, most notably the release of the West Memphis Three from prison.
The 90th Academy Awards comes amid a tumultuous period for Hollywood. #MeToo and the “Time’s Up” movements will cast a long shadow over the ceremony, hosted by Kimmel for the second year in a row. The allegations against Harvey Weinstein have roiled Hollywood. Three of his accusers are expected to be presenters. And the wide-open best picture race could make for some suspense in the final minutes of the show. “The Shape of Water,” which leads all films with 13 nominations, is locked in a tight race for best picture with “Get Out” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
