The study carried out by the National Institute of Health has shown that women consume much iron than men. The research revealed that 18 milligram of iron per day is consumed by an average adult female and 8 milligram of iron per day is consumed by an average adult male.

The Health institute further explained that the value changes during pregnancy. Women consume 27 milligrams of iron per day which is triple of what men utilize.

Dr. Rupali Datta, a Nutrition consultant added that

It is primarily because of the monthly cycle that women tend to lose blood. Typically in pregnancy, women require more iron because there is an increase in blood volume, which is needed for baby’s growth in the womb. Iron is needed to replenish the loss of blood during menstrual cycle and delivery of the baby. While it is important for both men and women, these two factors make iron an important mineral for women.

A Bangalore based Nutritionist Dr. Anju Sood supported Dr Datta’s explanations by saying that

Physiologically, women need more iron because of the menstrual cycle, you need to replenish blood, which is why you should load up on iron rich foods more.

Conclusions

The above research can be summarized by saying iron is needed in the body because of menstruation. It is advised to consume iron rich foods to make up for the iron lost during the monthly cycle.
The research has made us to know that during pregnancy, iron helps form the placenta that is an essential part of the womb. Iron helps the baby to grow and stay strong even up-to six months after childbirth.
