Felician Village, Holy Family Memorial open memory clinic

Felician Village and Holy Family Memorial have collaborated to open Lakeshore Memory Clinic — a clinic to care for patients who have memory loss conditions, including people with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

The clinic is affiliated with the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute Dementia Diagnostic Clinic Network, which has a statewide network of memory clinics. This network provides service and education beyond the boundaries of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is able to directly and locally influence the health of individuals and families.

According to the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute, 110,000 individuals in Wisconsin are living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia; this number is expected to rise to 130,000 by 2025.

A 2013 report from the Alzheimer’s Association found that one in three seniors dies of Alzheimer’s or dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States with 5.8 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s; by 2050, this number is expected to rise to nearly 14 million.

“With the formation of the Lakeshore Memory Clinic, both Felician Village and Holy Family Memorial are excited to continue exceeding industry standards by delivering high-quality, compassionate care to those who have memory loss and their families,” said Frank Soltys, president & CEO of Felician Village.

The clinic is one more offering in the extensive array of services provided by the Dementia Center of Excellence at Felician Village. These services include support, education, advocacy and, now, diagnosis.

Community outreach services offered by Felician Village include the Virtual Dementia Tour and Caregiver College to help enhance the skills and knowledge of caring for a person with Alzheimer’s.

Brett Norell, president & CEO of Holy Family Memorial, said: “Early diagnosis and treatment of dementia helps to ease the challenges of day-to-day care for the patient and family. With this collaboration we can combine expertise we have at Holy Family Memorial with expertise from Felician Village to help benefit our community.”

The treatment team for the memory clinic includes Cameron Goetz, HFM licensed psychologist; Melissa Koss, FNP, APNP-BC, HFM family nurse practitioner; Connie Thimmig, CDP, Felician Village certified dementia practitioner; and Jeffrey Corrigan, M.D., HFM family practice physician. During an appointment, the patient meets with the psychologist while family members meet with the dementia practitioner to gather the family’s concerns. The treatment team then meets to discuss findings. After this, the nurse practitioner meets with both the patient and family to discuss the diagnosis and develop a treatment plan if warranted.

The Lakeshore Memory Clinic is at Felician Village, 1635 S. 21st St., Manitowoc. Individuals can self-refer or get a referral from a primary care provider or through a social service agency.

Robotic lawn mower to be featured at Eis Implement

STIHL iMow Robotic Mower technology will be on display during the Eis Drive Green event May 16-18 a Eis Implement, 8431 County Road B, Two Rivers.

“What iRobot Roomba did for the vacuum cleaner, STIHL iMow does for lawns,” Eis Implement said in a press release. “This smart mower with high-performance STIHL battery technology will quietly and effectively mow your lawn for you. …

“The iMow automatically calculates how long it will mow per week according to the size of your mowing area,” the release added. “It mows the lawn in random paths to maximize efficiency and uses the shortest mowing duration necessary to maintain that ‘just cut’ look.”

The iMow Robotic Mower detects the borders of a mowing area via perimeter wire laid around the area. A low-voltage electrical signal generated by the iMow docking station flows through this perimeter wire.

HFM nurses recognized for excellence

Holy Family Memorial recently presented The DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses to Sara Jetton, R.N.; Charity Romero, R.N.; and Lois Schroeder, LPN, in recognition of the care and compassion they provide every day to patients and their family members. 

Jetton is a registered nurse who works in HFM Home Health Care. A patient’s family member nominated Jetton for the care she provided for her grandmother, writing: “I truly believed that no one could care for Grandma the way I thought she deserved to be cared for and loved, but Sara proved me wrong in the best possible way. … I got to spend the final week of my Grandma’s life just being her granddaughter and getting to sit there and hold her hand.”

Romero is a registered nurse and works in the Women’s and Children’s Department at the HFM Medical Center. Her nomination from a patient reads: “I am beyond grateful for my nurse who held me while I cried and helped me try to accept that not all things [labor and delivery] go as planned but it doesn’t have to be bad, though at the time it felt like the end of the world. HFM is lucky to have her and if she didn’t help so quickly as she did, I am not sure where my life or family’s life would be.”

Schroeder is a licensed practical nurse at HFM Pediatrics. She worked at HFM for 32 years and recently retired at the end of April. A parent submitted a nomination for Schroeder and expressed gratitude for her care and compassion. “It’s clear that Lois is amazing at what she does because she cares about the children she works with,” the parent wrote. “I don’t have enough time to describe all the times she has shown calm understanding when I spoke with her over the phone in her role as triage nurse, or the times I had to leave a message but still received a call back in a timely, courteous manner, even if one wasn’t required.”

The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of a patient who had received extraordinary care and compassion from his nurses during his final days. Nurses may be nominated by patients, families and colleagues, and they are chosen by a committee at HFM to receive The DAISY Award. Felician Village announces winner of 2019 Felician Award for Excellence in Volunteer Service

Shirley Horn has been named the 2019 recipient of the Felician Award for Excellence in Volunteer Service at Felician Village.

The award was presented at the 2019 Volunteer Appreciation ceremony. Part of Shirley’s nomination said: “She lives the values of Felician Village by serving in the Village Café several times a week, she leads numerous activities for residents and helps with major events, such as The Gardens Kentucky Derby and The Brewers Sausage Races.”

This award recognizes an individual whose volunteer actions have made a significant impact on the residents/operations of Felician Village.

‘OSHA Updates & Policy Refreshers’ set for May 28

Chris Hohol, planning section chief for the State of Wisconsin Inter-Agency Complex (Type 2) Incident Management Team, will be presenting “OSHA Updates & Policy Refreshers” May 28 in the Whitewater Room at Holy Family Memorial, 2300 Western Ave., Manitowoc.

Cost to attend is $15 for Chamber of Manitowoc County members and $25 for non-Chamber members. A breakfast buffet will be served at 7:30 a.m. with the program to follow at 8 a.m.

May 21 program to focus on digital advertising

Joe Mathes from Delta Digital Strategies will provide a sweeping presentation on the digital advertising tactics available to small- and medium-sized businesses in “Digital Advertising: How to Target Anyone, Anywhere at Anytime.”

The presentation will begin at noon May 21 in the auditorium at Orion Energy Systems, 2210 Woodland Drive, Manitowoc. The session will review traditional digital tactics such as search engine marketing, search engine optimization, targeted display and email. Mathes will also dig into and discuss the latest, cutting-edge “creepy-cool” tactics such as IP targeting, DID LookBack and Device ID Address Match.

Cost is free for Chamber of Manitowoc County members and $25 for non-Chamber members. Lunch is included.
