LANSING — Google is teaming up with Lansing Community College to help area residents strengthen their digital skills.

The tech company announced a $100,000 sponsorship on Tuesday that will allow LCC to offer free courses on digital skills, information technology support and establishing a business online.

The sponsorship is part of an initiative called Grow with Google.

“Our hope is as many people as possible take at advantage of it, and every seat in every class is full,” said Stephen Brokaw, a community engagement manager with Grow With Google.

Brokaw said the courses are an attempt to prepare people of all ages for the jobs of the future.

In March, Lansing was the third stop in the tech giant’s Grow with Google tour. The company hosted a two-day event at LCC with workshops and demos on topics like basic coding and search engine optimization aimed at helping job-seekers, small business owners and educators.

LCC President Brent Knight said he was impressed with the turn out and enthusiasm at the Grow with Google event and said he expects a similar response for the free courses.

“In 2018, people are thinking about how to make their business visible on the internet,” he said. “It’s part and parcel of starting a business.”
