“Unfortunately, especially in a field as technical as search engine optimization, there are going to be many people who try to take advantage of people who don’t fully understand core concepts,” says Terry Cane, COO at SEOHost.net. “The good news is that through a basic understanding of SEO, it’s fairly easy to spot them.”
First and foremost, SEO firms generally do not approach clients seeking business. Cane warns that webmasters should be suspicious of anyone who sends them a cold email making bold claims about ranking their site (or about how many websites they manage and ‘successfully’ optimize). These emails, says Cane, should be treated like any other spam.
“Most of the people who send messages like that have only a middling understanding of search engine optimization themselves,” he continues. “They focus on quantity over quality or try to claim guaranteed results – which brings me to my second point. If something sounds too good to be true, it almost definitely is.”
No one, says Cane, can guarantee their clients placement on the first page, and Google itself has deemed this an impossible promise. The only one that fully understands Google’s Algorithms, notes Cane, are the engineers who coded them. And it is not in their best interests to share.
“There are no secret techniques or shortcuts to proper optimization,” says Cane. “There are tactics and strategies that work better than others, certainly. But there’s no such thing as a golden ticket – anyone who claims otherwise is attempting to scam you.”
Cane concluded by explaining that a good search engine marketer will be able to describe, in detail, the strategies they’ll implement, the tools they use, and the ways they’ll measure success.
