There is a saying that losing body fat is 70% diet, 30% training, so you could be forgiven for wondering if training is really all that important, or could you just do the healthy eating part without regular exercise?
When we lose body fat, we can look and feel better – but do we actually improve our health?
The reality is that diet alone can’t replace the benefits to our health and well-being that exercise can and, as we age, it does take a little more focus to stay in shape.
It’s simple… getting active will improve your overall health and well-being – as well as develop and maintain the muscle tone – including your heart! – that keeps you looking toned, fit and younger.
At this point, you might be thinking, should I really care about developing muscle? The answer is an overwhelming Yes! Without muscle tone, things just hang there, and no one is ever happy about that. And, the older you get, the more it hangs. Muscle tone can help your posture too and can delay the onset of osteoarthritis.
Even slimmer bodies are susceptible to common problems like ‘bingo wings’ if there’s no muscle tone to keep the upper arms looking lean and toned. And that’s true for the butt, legs and back too.
I could be smaller but have always maintained I am happier with a stronger, lean body shape than a skinny, fragile one, and guess what? I can eat well so don’t feel like I’m on a constant diet.
Given all of these benefits, taking up some form of regular exercise really is worth the effort, whether it’s a steady walk, a swim or a short run, it all adds up to creating your best you. So, here’s my challenge, pick an activity and pledge to do it for 15-20 minutes every day for the next week. I promise, you will feel AMAZING!
