Global stocks fell on Monday, with declines in all 11 sectors of the S&P 500, as concerns grew over the rising threat of the coronavirus.

Coronavirus outbreaks have disrupted global supply chains linked to China. According to The Wall Street Journal, some economists estimate that a prolonged Chinese shutdown could cost up to $1 trillion in lost manufacturing output.

The impact of the coronavirus outbreaks varies by market. “Haven assets” such as gold are up, while airline stocks have dropped.

Not surprisingly, demand is surging for disposable masks, protective apparel and related medical supplies in China. Face masks have “near-universal use” in China’s mega cities, according to The Freedonia Group, and the demand for these nonwovens is expected to grow outside China to some extent as well.

Other research firms have also released reports on the impact of the coronavirus on various market segments:

  • DuckerFrontier reported that the coronavirus outbreak has endangered the global economy in 2020 and has already caused a large reduction in Chinese growth forecasts. Multinational corporations will need to adjust their 2020 goals and prepare contingency plans “should the coronavirus outbreak prove difficult to control.”
  • Oxford Economics explored the impact of the coronavirus on country economic forecasts for South Korea, Taiwan, India, and Indonesia.
  • IDC examined the possible impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the server and storage system supply chain. “Understanding how any production shutdowns affect the supply chain, and how that in turn flows upstream into the ODM and OEM environments, will be a leading indicator of broader server and storage system market performance during early 2020,” said Sebastain Lagana, research manager at IDC.
  • VPGMarketResearch.com provided detailed analysis of the coronavirus diagnostics market and sales and market share estimates for major suppliers of coronavirus tests.
  • DelveInsight gave an overview of pipeline development activities for severe acute respiratory (SARS) coronavirus infection and assessed the challenges and opportunities that influence R&D.
