This Week in Digital Marketing: Google Search Console Update

From the mouth of a digital marketing agency to the ears of marketers, entrepreneurs, and business owners everywhere, here is what’s been happening this week in digital marketing (SEO, PPC, content marketing, social media, etc.).

On January 8, 2018, Google announced their Search Console update, so this week’s roundup is dedicated to this topic. What do you need to know? Check out these top (and, for the time being, only) 5 articles:

  • Google to Roll Out New Search Console Features in Coming Weeks – The new Google Search Console, which will offer “more transparency into Google’s indexing, stateful two-way communications between Google and website owners to help resolve issues faster, and a responsive user-interface”, was available to all verified users as of Monday. This Search Engine Land article covers the highlights: four new reports (Search Performance, Index Coverage, AMP status and Job posting).
  • Google’s Updated Search Console Gives You More Detailed Search Performance and Indexing Data – TechCrunch’s article states that “Google is launching an update to its search console for webmasters today that, among other things, brings redesigned search performance and index coverage data to the service. In addition, the console now also features more detailed data about the errors that a site’s AMP pages and job listings may be throwing (and how to fix them).”
  • Google’s New Search Console Opens to All, Now Offers 16 Months of Site Performance Data – Venture Beat jumps on this news as well, with a kind reminder that this used to be called Webmaster Tools and that Google will send a message to all webmasters letting you know whether you have access to the new Search Console. According to VB, the most noteworthy feature is “the enhanced date ranges for analyzing historical data in Search Performance reporting, something that has been a major issue for webmasters for a while.” You’ll be able to access 16 months of data, rather than just 90 days.
  • New Google Search Console Now Available: More Data, More Features – This brief Search Engine Journal article offers just the highlights about the update. “Still in beta, the new Search Console will live side by side with the old version. Users can toggle between them in the navigation menu…. The new version does not have all the functionality of the classic version, which is why the two will live side-by-side until the beta is complete.”
  • Introducing the New Search Console – And, of course, what roundup about Google’s Search Console update would be complete without an article from the search engine giant itself? The official Google Webmaster Central Blog reports that “the new Search Console was rebuilt from the ground up by surfacing the most actionable insights and creating an interaction model which guides you through the process of fixing any pending issues.” They also provide a response from an actual user who’s been testing the new Search Console.
