Ticketfly, an event-ticketing company owned by Eventbrite, recently confirmed a data breach after hackers held the company’s database at ransom, then dumped it online. The names, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers of over 26 million Ticketfly users were exposed in this breach.

Prior to Ticketfly’s announcement, Motherboard reported that the company’s website had been hacked on May 31. The hackers vandalized Ticketfly.com by posting an image of a V for Vendetta character, accompanied with the words “Ticketfly HacKeD By IsHaKdZ.”

After vandalizing the Ticketfly website, hackers stole the company database and held it for ransom for 1 bitcoin (approximately $7,500 USD). Hackers told Motherboard that the stolen information was posted online when the ransom was not paid.

Ticketfly has reassured its customers that payment information and login credentials were not affected. The company states that they’ve “engaged leading third-party forensic and cybersecurity experts to investigate and help us address the issue, and have done this with your security top of mind.”
As an added security measure, the company has taken its website Ticketfly.com offline. However, Ticketfly users can still access their online accounts, as well as find more information about the security incident through the company’s Customer Support page.
What should I do?
- Secure exposed information online. Update your email passwords as a precaution, and be wary of phishing emails or other spam messages meant to capture your sensitive information.
- Secure exposed information offline. Be on the lookout for targeted mail scams that often follow data breach events. Report any mail scams you receive to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
- Go the extra mile. Consider placing your phone number on the Do Not Call Registry to help prevent spam and scam calls.
