COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The lineup of speakers for the USA Basketball Chicago Coach Academy – presented by Nike – was announced and will feature University of New Orleans’ head men’s basketball coach Mark Slessinger. Coach Slessinger will join gold medal-winning USA Basketball coaches, administrators and more May 19-20 at Lane Technical College Prep High School in Chicago. Registration for the USA Basketball Chicago Coach Academy is available online.
The Coach Academy provides valuable insight and education as the youth coaches work to obtain a USA Basketball Coach License.
“This is a true honor to be a part of the USA Basketball program,” said Slessinger. “I am excited to meet coaches attending the Coach Academy and talk about the game that I love.” Coach Slessinger will be presenting on the topic of Defensive Principles for Youth Players. The two-day academy includes Chris Collins (Northwestern University head men’s basketball coach), Don Showalter (USA Basketball), Doug Bruno (DePaul University head women’s coach) and Lisa Stone (St. Louis University head women’s coach) among others.
“It’s a blessing to receive an opportunity to give back. I am humbled to be able to speak amongst a lineup of so many tremendous coaches and leaders. It will be great to represent the University of New Orleans and our city.”
During his seven seasons on the Lakefront, Slessinger has helped lead a renaissance of UNO men’s hoops, leading the Privateers to back-to-back postseason appearances for the first time in 20 seasons. In 2016-17, the Privateers earned the Southland Conference and Southland Tournament crowns to become the only team in the state of Louisiana to earn an NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament appearance. He was awarded conference, district and state Coach of the Year by the Southland, NABC, and Louisiana Sports Writers Association. In 2017-18, New Orleans defeated the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational, advancing to the final eight of the CBI.
In the classroom, 96 percent of seniors during Slessinger’s tenure graduated with five walking across the stage during spring commencement last week, including Jorge Rosa, who returns to the squad as a graduate student in 2018-19.
