The United States will look to climb into the men’s hockey quarterfinals with a victory over Slovakia on Monday evening. The 2018 Winter Olympic qualification playoff game between the two countries will start at 10:10 p.m. ET and will be broadcasted live on NBCSN and on NBC’s Olympics website.
Team USA has come off a disappointing preliminary round of games, as the team won just one of three matches. The United States ended the round robin tournament with a 5-0 loss to the Russians, putting their record at 1-0-1-1 and putting themselves into a qualification playoff spot with Slovakia.
Should Brian Gionta, Troy Terry, and the rest of the United States want to advance to the quarterfinals of the men’s tournament, they’ll have to get through Slovakia first. Team USA earned their sole win of the tournament thanks to the two goals of Ryan Donato in a 2-1 victory last week. The team has scored just four total goals through three games in this tournament, and will need more offense if they want to keep their medal hopes alive.
A loss would shut the Americans out of the medal podium for a second Olympic games in a row.
Slovakia comes into Monday night’s game with the same record as the United States, with their sole win coming as an upset to the Russian team on the opening day of the tournament.
