Social focus on small business webinar

WICHITA FALLS – It’s that time of year again when businesses start gearing up for the holidays and hopefully see that spike in business that comes this time of year, but with so many choices and everyone competing for your attention, especially in the digital age, small, local business owners say promoting their business can be challenging.

Owner of Hastings Restoration & Cleaning Services, Kenneth Hastings told us, “The age span between me and what this social media is all about, I know nothing about it so I’m here to try to learn how to be able to Facebook.”

Hastings continued to tell us that with the generation already using social media for everything, it’s about that time he learned how to use it too.

“Nobody advertises in the newspaper, nobody advertises in the phone book anymore, it’s all social media,” Hasting said.

Business Analyst, Walter Lambert said that this is exactly why the Small Business Development Center at MSU wanted to host this webinar.

“We’re going to be talking about search engine optimization, so Ken has got a website that he just launched all on his own,” he continued by saying. “SEO is really daunting when you first get started so there going to talk about some basics of that, some best practices.”

In addition to the best social media postings, something older business owners like Mr. Hastings was able to benefit from.

Lambert added, “I heard Ken say that he knows that quality content gets better traction. The fact that he knows that already, better equips him to succeed for his business now that he’s independent.”

“All my competitors are doing it, there’s just no printed advertising…It’s gone, just about,” Hastings told us. But he said as long as he can learn and put into practice some of these tips he learned, his business will be able to move forward and survive.

Lambert finished by telling us that 4 out of 5 consumers are finding products and services online so it’s important for business owners like Mr. Hastings stay active on social media.
