Scholarship available

The Bethel Woman’s Club will award a $3,000 scholarship to a deserving Bethel Park High School senior in May. Applications are available in the counselor’s office at the high school.

Nursing scholarships

Scholarship opportunities are provided to local by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Registered Nurses Club to nursing students entering their final year of studies in a diploma, associate degree or Bachelor of Science degree. Nurses actively pursuing advanced education in nursing may also apply. Scholarships are awarded each April. FUNDRAISERS

Pink Pamper event

Pink Pamper will present “The Bubble Ball” from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, March 30, at the Circuit Center & Ballroom, South Side, Pittsburgh. Enjoy wine and spirits, culinary delights, and shop at the Pink Pamper Marketplace. There will be dancing to Loyal Entertainment, food tasting and sipping, an auction and 50/50 raffle, cash bar and valet parking. All proceeds benefit the Pink Pamper HaLoFund, which supports women with medical-related hair loss due to cancer treatment. Tickets are $100 each and can be purchased at pinkpamper.org.

Donations sought

Beginning April 2, Friends of Family Hospice & Palliative Care, Mt. Lebanon, will accept donations of gently-used or new, good quality goods from the community. Items will be sold at FH&PC’s fall sale to support its mission of providing quality care to hospice patients and their families. Desired items include: jewelry, collectibles, china, glassware, kitchen and craft items, linens, mirrors, lamps, artwork, books, handyman items, DVDs and furniture (no large bookcases or entertainment centers). Items may be dropped off at Family Hospice, 50 Moffett Street, Mt. Lebanon between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Mini-THON

Upper St. Clair High School’s Mini-THON, a student-led fundraising event supporting childhood cancer research, will be held on April 5, at Fort Couch Middle School. The event, based on Penn State’s THON, will offer a designated “Community Time” from 6:30 to 9 p.m., enabling residents of all ages to participate in games, purchase refreshments and dance. Following Community Time, participating high schoolers will be “locked-in” until 6 a.m. Saturday for a night full of dancing, food, games, and more. Lunch/fashion show

Keynotes Annual Scholarship Luncheon & Fashion Show will be held at 11 a.m. April 13, at St. Clair Country Club, 2300 Old Washington Road, Upper St. Clair. This year’s theme is “Lace and Flowers.” Fashions will be presented by Chico’s. There will be a 50/50 and basket raffles as well as gift certificates. Jewelry and cosmetic vendors will display their products prior to the luncheon. Tickets are $35. Those reserving a full table of eight will receive a gift. Coffee and Conversation

The Residence of Logan located at 5851 Keystone Drive in Bethel Park will hold a bi-monthly Coffee and Conversation to educate seniors about the benefits of retirement community living including helping seniors live affordable, productive and vibrant lives. The program will be held at 10 a.m. March 28 and April 11. Refreshments will be served and tours of the community and model apartments will be given. ‘Cinderella’

Carnegie Performing Arts Center will present the children’s ballet “Cinderella” March 29, 30 and 31 at the Andrew Carnegie Music Hall, 300 Beechwood Avenue, Carnegie. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m. with the Sunday show at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for children, students and seniors. The role of the grown-up Cinderella is danced by Elizabeth Scalise of Bridgeville, a junior at Chartiers Valley High School. The young selves of stepsisters Agatha and Adele are played by Alexis Albert of Scott Township and Shelby Self of Collier Township. An older version of Agatha is portrayed by Miranda Richardson of Mount Lebanon, who is a graduating senior at the Carnegie Performing Arts Center. Mary Pusateri, of Bethel Park dances the role of the Stepmother and is an instructor and alumni of the Carnegie Performing Arts Center. Bunny Breakfast

The Chartiers Valley High School/Middle School Chorus Boosters will hold its annual Bunny Breakfast fundraiser from 9 a.m. to noon on March 30, in the high school cafeteria on Thoms Run Road in Bridgeville. Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage and beverage. Tickets are $8 each and include the breakfast, egg decorating and hunt, crafts and other activities. A fish pond activity is available for an additional $1. All proceeds benefit the chorus to support community performances, competition trips and student activities.

Opera

Pittsburgh Opera returns to the Benedum Center with Puccini’s “La bohème,” March 30-April 7. Set against the backdrop of 1830s Paris, La bohème follows four impoverished artists surviving with little more than friendship, passion, and love for their art. When Rodolfo, a poet, and Mimì, a young seamstress, meet, the two are drawn into a tumultuous and passionate affair with a love that can only be broken by death. English subtitles will be projected above the stage. Tickets start at $14 for adults, with tickets for kids and teens ages 6-18 offered at half-price. Public hearing

The Board of Commissioners of the Township of Upper St. Clair will hold a public hearing on April 1, for case PLC19-0001, beginning at 7:30 p.m. or shortly thereafter, in the Board of Commissioners’ Meeting Room, 1820 McLaughlin Run Road.

Historical EVENTS

Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation offers the following tours in April:

n Free tours at the Old Allegheny County Jail Museum, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, April 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. Tours, led by knowledgeable docents, take 30 minutes, with the last tour leaving at 12:30. Reservations are not required, but appreciated.

n Free illustrated lecture: Painting for Preservation, 6 to 7:30 p.m. April 11, at the Landmarks Preservation Resource Center, 744 Rebecca Ave., Wilkinsburg. Cory Bonnet, a Pittsburgh oil paint artist and preservationist who paints contemporary nostalgic scenes of the Pittsburgh area using salvaged and reclaimed materials, will present. Reservations are not required, but appreciated.

Nature program

Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer the program “Flight of the Timberdoodle” at 7:30 p.m. April 2, at Shelter 4 in Mingo Creek County Park. The group will gather in a field at dusk to listen for and observe the American Woodcock and one of the most unique courtship displays in the animal kingdom. Dress for moderate hiking and the weather. A flashlight may be needed on the return hike. Reservations are required at 724-228-6867. There is no fee for this program.

Senior health care talk

Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills, 1240 Washington Rd, Mt. Lebanon, will host Registered Nurse and Senior Health Care Presenter Barbara A. Veazey for a comprehensive overview of the following topics: Social Security, Medicare, Medigap and Advantage Plans (4/3); Long term care insurance, Health Care Advance Directives and veteran’s benefits (4/10); and Selecting home care services, assisted living, skilled care and senior safety (4/17). The event will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 3, 10 and 17. Plan to attend one or all of these sessions at a cost of $5 per session, to cover materials. Children’s play

“My Traveling Song,” an original interactive play by Hiawatha Project, will debut April 5-14 at Carnegie Stage, 25 W. Main Street, Carnegie. In the play, especially made for children ages 1-5, a mother and child are confronted with unexpected natural obstacles, but weather through. “My Traveling Song” reveals that connections between loved ones, communities and the physical world around us can help us feel safe, loved and free to imagine a more empathic and playful world. Fabric fair

The Salvation Army’s Greater Pittsburgh Women’s Auxiliary Fabric Fair will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 6, at The Salvation Army Pittsburgh Temple Worship and Service Center located at 1060 McNeilly Road, Mt. Lebanon (next to Seton LaSalle Catholic High School). Free parking is available on site and at two satellite locations from which free shuttles are available: Keystone Oaks High School and Keystone Oaks Middle School. Snacks and lunch items will also be available for purchase. The success of Fabric Fair is a result of the donations of all the items for sale. Donated fabric and related items are always in need, as are additional volunteers to measure and sort fabric in preparation for the fair. Shred event

Kid’s Rec

Peters Township Parks & Recreation will hold Kid’s Rec for ages 6 to 10 from 10 a.m. to noon on April 16. Spring flower show

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens’ Spring Flower Show: Gardens of the Rainbow is open now through April 21, featuring prisms, topiaries and interactive experiences for all ages, plus tens of thousands of spring blooms in vibrant floral hues. Bereavement

Through its Pastoral Care Department, the AHN Canonsburg Hospital is currently offering a Bereavement Support Group from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, through April 10, for anyone grieving a recent loss. Emotional wellness
