Google reveals Pixel 4 launch date with event in New York

Google has finally revealed the launch date of the next Pixel smartphone by announcing a hardware event taking place next month.

The tech giant will formally unveil the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL in New York on October 15.

Which will probably be a relief as technology fans already feel they know everything there is to know about the new phone.

Designed to go toe-to-toe with the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, the Pixel phones will come with a multi-lens rear camera that’s already been leaked by Google itself.

At the event, the tech company is inviting select media to ‘Come see a few new things Made by Google.’

We’re not sure what other hardware will get revealed as Google has confirmed it’s not making tablets any more. Potentially a smart watch to rival the Apple Watch?

Either way, gadget fans know what to expect from the Pixel 4: a great camera, bumped-up specs, Android 10 and a new feature that lets you unlock the device with your face.

Google says it will take the ‘hassle’ out of face unlocking seen on rival smartphones, which can require people to lift the device all the way up, pose in a certain position and then wait for their equipment to unlock. The firm has been working for five years on a motion-sensing radar called Soli, which it says will enable the Pixel 4 to detect the user’s face faster and in ‘almost any orientation’, even if it’s being held upside down.

‘As you reach for Pixel 4, Soli proactively turns on the face unlock sensors, recognising that you may want to unlock your phone,’ Google explained.

In a blog post, Pixel product manager Brandon Barbello explained how security and privacy is one of the “core principles” on the new smartphone, stressing that image data used from face unlocking never leaves your phone.

Google’s Pixel 4 will also have another trick up its sleeve, known as Motion Sense. This will allow users to swipe their hand in front of the Pixel 4 without touching it – in the teaser video, a person is shown using Motion Sense to skip music tracks.

‘Pixel 4 will be the first device with Soli, powering our new Motion Sense features to allow you to skip songs, snooze alarms, and silence phone calls, just by waving your hand,’ Google continued.

‘These capabilities are just the start, and just as Pixels get better over time, Motion Sense will evolve as well.’
