Personalize Yelp Based on Your Dietary, Lifestyle Needs

Whether you’re a gluten-free pet owner who likes hiking and brunch or a vegetarian parent who loves donuts, farmer’s markets, and breweries, Yelp can help.

The business directory is rolling out a new experience that allows users to tailor their app based on interests, diet, and lifestyle.

“We’re starting an open conversation with people to genuinely get to know their preferences, giving them the control to transform the Yelp app,” Akhil Ramesh, head of consumer product, wrote in a blog announcement. “Turning it into a personal concierge for all things local, saving them time and energy.”

Start by indicating your preferences: kosher pescatarian, home and auto owner, gender neutral restrooms, etc. Then watch as the app updates, in real time, to highlight those businesses and activities you’re most likely to care about.

And, in a few weeks, when you decide to start eating meat again or that you want to take up yoga, simply revise your inclinations: A fresh personalized home screen and search will lead you in new directions.

Look for Yelp’s heart symbol to understand why a restaurant or experience is right for you.

“By surfacing information that represents the unique flavor of every neighborhood, we are making it easier for people to meaningfully connect with great local businesses,” Ramesh said.

Shared preferences are visible only to you; information like dietary preferences (gluten-free, halal, keto, kosher, pescatarian, vegan, vegetarian), interests, lifestyle, and accessibility (wheelchair access, gender-neutral restrooms) will never be shared with a third party, the company promised.
